What is culture?

Is there a specific definition of what culture is? what is it made up of? Is it just language and food that makes up a culture, or do customs, norms, holidays, etc. also contribute to it? When I think about the Indian culture, some images come to my mind, and they are the following:

-Beautiful Classical Dance
-Tasty Spicy Food
- The dress-Saree and Salwar Kameez
-Beautiful Indian music

These are some of my thoughts. Please feel free to share your thoughts about the Indian culture.

  1. Ballywood!!! That's the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Indian culture~ Also...people in India eat their meals with their fingers right? My father once visited India and he told me that people did not use any spoons or forks.

  2. Yes, it is true. People in India do not use forks, knifes or spoons and there are several reasons for that. First of all, the Indian food does not require any forks. The food is eaten with naan or roti (types of bread) with the hand. We take a piece of bread, dip it in the curry and eat. In the olden days, food was served on banana leafs, and using a fork or knife and on a leaf was not possible. Another reason is hygiene. Whenever we sit down for a meal, we wash our hands, because we are going to use them to eat. We Indians think ""Food is divine and needs to be enjoyed with touch, smell and taste. There is no joy in using a knife and fork to eat it." :-) hope this has answered your question
